Canine Respiratory Disease Notice 11/29/2023

11/29/2023

Guidance from Anderson Lakes Animal Hospital regarding Canine Respiratory Disease.

We are monitoring the situation and are following with the guidance of our state and our veterinary medical community. This disease has symptoms similar to canine influenza, kennel cough, and parainfluenza. The cause of this particular illness has not yet been determined.

While other parts of the country are seeing rises in cases, as of today’s date there have been no confirmed cases in the state of Minnesota.

As with all infectious diseases, whether they are viral or bacterial in nature, we recommend using your best judgment and maintaining sanitary habits when socializing your pet.

Respiratory diseases spread through direct contact or through water droplets from sneezing and coughing so avoid high risk situations for your dog such as boarding kennels, dog parks, and doggy day care facilities if you are unsure about the health status of other dogs in the environment. Don’t share dog bowls, toys or doggy chews between dogs. Make sure your dog is up to date on their routine yearly vaccinations. You can check with your veterinarian if you are unsure when your dog was last routinely vaccinated.

If you are concerned your pet is experiencing the following symptoms (cough, sneeze, nose/eye discharge BUT otherwise acting normal) it is best to monitor at home and discontinue any and all social outings with your dog. Sheltering in place while your pet is ill is the best way to decrease the spread of disease.

If your pet is experiencing the following symptoms along with the highlighted items please call our office and speak with a technician to determine if this is an urgent matter that will need a visit to our office.

Symptoms include but are not limited to:
Coughing
Sneezing
Nose or eye discharge
***Labored breathing
***Lethargy
***Decreased appetite

If you have a pet coming in to our office experiencing these symptoms:
PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE WHEN YOU ARRIVE- Prior to coming into the building.
We will be operating with infectious disease protocols and safety standards for all appointments.

Thank you,
The Staff of Anderson Lakes Animal Hospital
